apples, dammit
The Big Secret to Learning How to Draw:
In the Beginning... You see an apple, and you draw an apple. You look at your drawing, and it's utter crap. It looks nothing like the real thing, and you wonder why. "Hey, a real apple is red and round. My drawing is red and round. Huh. What's wrong?"
You draw some more apples. Many times.
And finally, one day, you have a Eureka! moment. You realize, *d'oh!* a real apple isn't entirely round! It's wider at the top, narrower underneath. It's got funky little lumps at the bottom. It's got a dip like a crazy deep belly button at the very top. You draw another apple. The result is better, but it's still crap. Much nicer crap than before, but still.... Hmm.
You draw more apples. Repeat.
Another day of drawing, another Eureka! moment. Hello! The red isn't really red. This particular apple is slightly darker than true red. And it's got some tiny tan spots on it. And at the top, the red turns into a pale green color near the stem. You draw an apple once

A concise guide on how to get better at art
So you’re a kid looking down at your anime or comic characters and wondering why after a few years of doodling things aren’t looking like how you imagine them in your head. Or maybe you’re a college student who’s wondering why the colours in your paintings aren’t coming out right. Maybe you’re an older fellow or lady who’s dabbling in art and you’re having trouble with drawing hands. Whoever you are and whatever your problem, you all have something in common;
You want to get better at representational art.
Here on deviantart it’s often the case where a noobie will ask a question and another noobie will answer with the very uninspired answer of "practice practice practice." At its core this advice is sound, but the noobie-teacher has just regurgitated what he or she has heard a thousand times over from other would-be noobie-teachers and has not expressed much else. Diligence is the key, but without a direction or goal this diligence might be

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 16, 2009, 5:58 PM
I am posting a final update here for my sister, whom you know as Hakubaikou.  I had meant to do this sooner, but it's been very difficult for me.  As some of you may have heard, Hakubaikou recently passed away in a car accident.  Her death was instant, and she did not suffer any pain.

My sister loved art, and she loved interacting with everyone on this site, and meeting fellow artists at the conventions.  I remember when she first discovered the online art community.  She didn't have any local friends who were into drawing, and she was just giddy that she could meet so many other artists, right from her room.  And of the people she met, many became good friends, as close to her as any other.  I know for certain that my sister was very happy with her life, especially in recent years, and I thank you all for being a part of it.

As for this gallery, my family is retaining all rights to my sisters artwork, and I kindly ask people not to alter, repost, or publish my sister's artwork in any way.  Her drawings were very personal to her, and she took great care to make them look exactly as she envisioned.  And we ask that you respect her works as they were intended to be seen, here and on her own website. That said, we are leaving the gallery available for anyone to view and enjoy, and any proceeds from print sales will go towards a scholarship fund, set up in her name. (Details will be posted here at a later time.)

Edit:
A link for those of you who asked about making direct donations to the scholarship fund... www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?…
The exact details are still being worked out.  But the eligible recipients will be women in the USC film school, aspiring to become cinematographers.  (The fund is being organized by some of my sister's closest friends from film school.)

Hello Haku ! It's been a while since our days in GaiaOnline. Who thought I'd find myself back on this site again eh ? Haha. Even though I left the forums, I still remembered the helpful advice you gave everyone in Art Discussion/Picture Post and the way your art inspired others.

The way I see it, you're now part of the force. I raise my Wacom stylus to you.
