100 Theme Challenge

Theme #43: Dying
5 down, 95 to go.

Umm.... I'm not sure what to make of this one. Cliches aside, it feels really... odd. The space is weird, the colors are weird, the whole scene is weird. This 100 Theme Challenge has been interesting. I'm curious as to what my pics will look like by the time I get through all 100. o.O

90 min. in Photoshop.

If that's how you feel about it then you've created something very perfect by accident.

Your picture shows exactly what I'm feeling right now. I can just sit aside and watch.

Good pic... really like it.

great GREAAT JOB this is realistic, simple technique p¿but it expresses a lot! I can feel the heavy ambience on the room and the overwhelming of the people inside

the blurs make it feel like there is movement, yet the picture is really...still (not in a bad way, it's solemn)

also blurring makes it more...detached? yet at the same time, i can imagine it's because there are tears in my eyes...

it's a very moving piece. keep going with 100tc!! gambatte!!

the way the colors are is really intresting
Its almost as though she is the one who died, because the window is so brightly colored. as though her spirit is leaving.

This kind of makes me think of the poem "The Raven", By Edgar Allen Poe, since he wrote it while his wife was dying. That's just me though.

This one really reminds me of Becky Cloonan's Dracula art. You're putting out a lot of work lately! It's good!

It's all scraps though. :-P I don't have time for full-fledged works, but I'm going absolutely stir crazy wanting to do artwork since I'm so swamped with work. I swear, the more crazy/stressful my work schedule is, the more I want to suck up time doing personal artwork. It's awful! I wish I could get this insanely motivated during downtimes. It's just major procrastination kicking in.

I'm not familiar with Becky Cloonan. I'll definitely have to check her out!

you are always so good at portraying emotion in your art. also, did you intend for the window panes to look like a crucifix? that would be good symbolism.

Oh wow, no, actually! I admit, I hadn't thought of that at all, but it's fascinating that you bring it up. I'm not particularly religious myself, so I tend not to notice religious symbols in things. But it would definitely put an interesting additional meaning on what's going on. Thank you so much for pointing that out.

Composition is good. The emotion here is very strong and cinematic. I like that in this case the man is showing more emotion than the woman. For me, it suggests something about "who" is dying and something about the personalities. (Specifically, I interpret this image to mean it is the woman who is dying, who has known and accepted it, leaving the man a bit stunned by the news. Because of the bed in the picture, my assumption is that they are a couple. There are all sorts of other things I read into the characters based on costumes, posture, and response.)

I do think the perspective is slightly off in that the plane of the bed and the man on the chair may be slightly different from the woman in the window. Part of it I think could be fixed easily by adjusting the way her dress drapes on the floor.

The lighting on the woman is probably a bit off. We should be able to see a bit more of her front and her face in profile based on how much light we see on the man behind her.

But overall, these are very minor issues, and this is very good piece of conceptual work.

Oh my. Your comment makes it very clear I have a serious problem with this pic. Heehee. There's a third person in the room, but I think I made it way too hard to see him.

Yeah, I think the perspective is off too. I moved some things around which maybe I shouldn't have done. And thanks for the lighting suggestion.

It has a very good composition and the lighting is certainly fantastic. My only problem is the readability, it's like there's a story in there but we can't see it - like knowing that there's an emotive content but not being allowed to really see what it is?

So, I would like to see more story telling in this sort of thing... it feels very staged at this point.

Ah, man, that's a great point. Thanks for bringing this up. (You sound like one of my film school professors.) ^_^

I'm afraid I didn't put any thought into this thing. It still doesn't even feel like mine. I've never had that happen on a drawing before, and it feels so strange.

It's a left over from some Jason Chan demos I've been watching I think. The big point that I pulled out of them was to focus on readability and composition over anything else at first - just to get your story moving... and you have that composition, but I'm not feeling the readability just yet.

It's not a bad picture though, I like it - I just think that if you were to tackle it again that it could use some story elements :)

I'm glad to hear you don't mind, I always worry about giving them cause there's a huge stigma that comes with critiques anymore due to all of the looooosers out there who think they can help but really just want to inflate their ego.

Luckily I burned my ego alive long ago :p.

If it's any consolation I only really critique those who I think are gonna at least try things with an open mind., so that says volumes about you too :)

I miss chatting too. One of these days, when I have more freetime, we should do that. I haven't chatted online with anyone in ages.

This 100 Theme thing has been pretty cool. I started it thinking it was an excuse to do new stuff that maybe isn't in my normal style or comfort zone, but even within 5 pictures so far, I'm surprised by just how comfortable it's been to just wing it and do whatever pops in my head.

It's a freedom partly because I'm submitting in scraps, I think. And I'm thinking if I continue and do the full 100, it should be interesting. I'm not sure where I'll end up with it, and that's kind of fun, not knowing.
